Professional Summary
Specialty: Rice Breeding and Genetics
Research:
Dr. Samonte lead pioneering research and breeding efforts focused on specialty and health-promoting rice varieties. My program develops high-yielding, premium-quality, and stress-tolerant rice cultivars that support sustainable agricultural production while meeting the growing global demand for diverse and nutritious rice products.
The Specialty Rice Breeding (SRB) Program focuses on the development of high-amylose, jasmine-type, basmati-type, and high-anthocyanin rice varieties through the integration of conventional breeding, ideal plant type breeding, genomics, and modern phenotyping approaches. Research activities emphasize the identification and application of genetic and phenotypic selection criteria to improve grain yield, grain quality, nutritional value, and resistance or tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
Through multidisciplinary breeding and genetics research, the program aims to deliver superior rice cultivars that enhance farmer profitability, strengthen food security, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of U.S. rice production systems.
Released rice varieties and germplasms: NeoTrinity, Trinity, Calmochi-203 as lead breeder, and Calamore-201, Calhikari-203, S-202, L-207, M-209, A202, and Colorado as co-breeder
