Undergraduate Degrees
The Department of Soil & Crop Sciences at Texas A&M University is one of the largest departments of its kind in the nation and is preeminent throughout the world. Students in our department have the option to choose between two hands-on, science based majors.
Not only will you be learning from faculty that are experts in their field, but you will have the chance to participate and become a part of the many high impact, enriching opportunities that can only be found in these two majors such as:
- Conducting research with current faculty.
- On campus employment that provides practical hands-on training beyond the classroom.

Soil and Crop Sciences Program Options
B.S. Plant and Environmental Soil Science
Students following this curriculum develop and utilize basic scientific knowledge to understand the most fundamental resources—plants, soils, and water—and the interaction of these resources in different environmental settings.
B.S. Turfgrass Science
Turfgrass Science prepares graduates for careers in: management—golf courses, athletic fields, public, private or commercial grounds; production agriculture—turfgrass production, or plant breeding; agribusiness—seed sales, turf equipment and supplies, landscape contractor, commercial or home lawn care specialists; education—consulting, extension, or public relations.
Undergraduate Minor Programs
In addition to their core studies, soil and crop sciences students often have the opportunity to pursue minors in related fields such as environmental science, sustainable agriculture, plant genetics, or agricultural business management to enhance their expertise and career prospects.
Career Options
Our students have the opportunity to impact global climate change, participate in biofuel agronomics, manage high quality green spaces like golf courses, sports fields and parks, impact environmental and sustainable development, as well as be a part of the exciting field of feeding and clothing people worldwide through agronomy, farming and crop production.
We equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage soil, water and plant systems that are sustainable for both civilization and our natural environment as we meet the challenge to provide food, clothing, housing, and fuel for more than nine billion people by 2050. A drive to make U.S. a leader in organic cotton
Demand is growing for organic cotton in the U.S., but imports continue to pick up the slack of inadequate domestic production. A new project led by Texas A&M AgriLife Research aims to turn the situation around by identifying the challenges to and opportunities for U.S. organic cotton growers.
