Soil Judging Team

The Soil Judging Team at Texas A&M University aims to give students hands-on exposure to the various soils found throughout the country, and the main impacts the soils have on each area’s community. This team applies soil science, agronomic, and ecosystem management principles discussed in other classes, with a visual representation to help students connect those principals and more completely understand soil systems. Students compete in an area contest each fall. The location for this contest rotates throughout the region (Region IV) providing opportunities to see a wider variety of soils. The top two teams from the area contest compete at nationals in the spring.

The team is open to anyone interested in soils.

Dr. Felipe Aburto

Weed Science Team

The goal of the weed judging contest preparations is to provide the students with a fundamental understanding as well as hands-on training on the basics of weed identification and management. This activity is highly relevant to students majoring in agronomy, turf, horticulture, forestry, rangeland science, and for anyone who is interested in vegetation identification and management.

This contest provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to practice tangible agronomic skills on the spot and receive feedback from industry agronomists with prizes for both teams and individuals. Students who compete need to be knowledgeable on a wide range of agronomic topics such as crop, weed, and insect identification, diagnosis of crop nutrient deficiency or herbicide injury, and agronomic problem-solving.
