A moonshot scientist’s giant leap for plant-kind
Jess Atkin’s favorite planet is Earth. It always has been. No surprise there — after all, she spends her days nurturing plants, diving into oceans to clean up debris and caring for her horses at her home on a small patch of land outside of Bryan. Atkin’s second favorite thing in the universe? The moon. It’s the quiet, constant companion in the night sky that has long captivated her imagination. Atkin is researching how to grow chickpeas in lunar regolith, otherwise known as moondust.

Jessup named Texas A&M AgriLife center director at San Angelo
Russell Jessup ‘97, Ph.D., has been named director of the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at San Angelo, effective May 1. Since 2023, Jessup has served as a Texas A&M AgriLife Research industrial hemp and perennial grass breeder and a professor in the Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences. He served AgriLife Research and the department from 2009-2016 as an assistant professor and from 2016-2023 as an associate professor.
