Robert Lemon Cotton is Texas leading cash crop, supporting an economic impact of $5.2 billion. Texas growers annually plant about 6 million acres. That equates to 9,000 square miles of cotton fields, or a cotton field the size of New Hampshire! As Extension Cotton Agronomist it is my responsibility to deliver technically sound information and provide support to this diverse industry, consisting of growers, consultants, allied industry, governmental agencies, educators, consumers, etc. Modern production agriculture is a blending of numerous technologies, and the cotton industry is at the forefront in developing and adopting new advancements. As such, our clientele look to the Extension Cotton Agronomy program for objective assessments of existing and emerging technologies, and solutions to near- and long-term problems. Our applied research activities focus on problem solving and technology assessment. Our program is looked upon as a clearinghouse for objective information and sound recommendations. Results from our applied research activities and the research of colleagues provide the information that feeds our outreach program. The ultimate goal of our research and education program is to provide information that supports a healthy and environmentally sound cotton production industry for Texas.
