Frank Hons I teach courses at the undergraduate level that are designed to educate students in chemical and biological reactions in soil that influence nutrient availability to plants. These courses prepare students for careers as turf managers, consultants, regulators, agricultural producers and graduate school. My graduate course provides an in-depth understanding of soil nutrients - plant interrelationships and prepares students as professionals, environmental consultants, crop consultants, and for many other careers.

Through research, my students, colleagues and I try to develop a better understanding of mechanisms that influence nutrient dynamics in soil, especially those of nitrogen, and management effects on soil organic carbon sequestration. This research creates a foundation for better soil and nutrient management, more efficient crop production, and decreased potential for environmental pollution.
