My research project addresses two dimensions of basic knowledge that are important to developing effective strategies of weed control: the physiological response of crops to the presence of weeds and the physiological aspects of weed biology which offer constraints to their control. While other related projects focus upon the ecological components and production dimensions of crop-weed interactions, this project centers on the fundamental physiological processes such as photosynthesis, photosynthate partitioning, mineral assimilation, and water use which greatly affect crop-weed ecology and weed control practices. My program also addresses the challenges of crop production from the perspective of population growth and environmental quality.
